"Storming onto the national stage with a look that screamed artist and writings that preached a mixed message of rebellion and conformity, Hubbard captivated the popular imagination while promoting the ideals of industry. A prolific and widely read writer and publisher, he influenced popular culture and thought for nearly two decades.

With keen business acumen, Hubbard used the popularity of the Roycroft Press to create a market for Arts and Crafts home furnishing. Roycroft became not only a successful business venture but also a utopian arts community and a vacation destination that attracted both artists and visitors from around the world.

Nonetheless, Hubbard was a controversial and divisive figure. He was hailed as a prophet by those who believed he espoused the ideals of Arts and Crafts, and he was reviled as a charlatan by those who saw him simply using Roycroft for his own advancement and search for immortality.
Today, the name Elbert Hubbard still incites passion among those who either love him or hate him, and the Roycroft Campus that he created still endures, inextricably tied to his character, his aspiration, and his passion. Roycroft is the legacy of a man who was, without a doubt, one of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century’s most eccentric, charismatic, and colorful characters.”~ PBS

Thanks everyone for the great photos of "our" car in the Memorial Day Parade!
This photo was contributed by Denise Atherton. Kathy was generous enough to volunteer to drive her vehicle in the parade. Marion and Sheila distributed candy to "children" of all ages along the way.
It was a nice way to kick-off summer activities.
The BCS Band did a great job during the parade and at the Memorial Day Ceremonies.
BOFA members remained to enjoy the annual chicken BBQ.
Enjoy the sunshine!

Poetry Workshop 5/24/10

Kathy researched and presented a poetry workshop. Kathy brought samples of poetry from her own collection of works by various authors as well as samples of her own recent work. Members learned the basic rules of Haiku and Limericks and created several group-generated poems that illustrated the contrast between these two writing styles. (Kathy’s workshop outline has been added to the BOFA binder for future reference.)

The challenges of line-drying early spring laundry seemed to hi-jack the train of thought. We are looking forward to more poetry from the group. A fun time was had by all!

Thanks Kathy for your efforts in preparing this activity.
See you at the Memorial Day Parade!
