Christmas Trees in the Belfast Park

Kathy Garrison adding paper ornaments
The Belfast Organization for Artists has been participating in the annual Belfast Lions Club Trees in the Park since 2012.

Every year members work together to create a unique theme and wire the ornaments to the outside tree.

The BOFA theme this year is "Angels Among Us"

The tree lighting ceremony is planned for Dec. 4th.

Participating members, Sharon, Elaine, Barb, Cecy, Kathy, and Sheila colored approximately 86 paper ornaments for use on the BOFA tree and for donation to the Belfast Historical Society and the Belfast Library for their respective trees. Larry and Kathy collaborated on the tree topper to create a method for the ten foot ribbons to stream and flow down the sides of the tree.

BOFA members are also collaborating with the Belfast Historical society to do a seasonal, Family Christmas theme for their storefront window. Families have contributed copies of original holiday family photos.

More to come in 2023

Kathy Garrison, the BOFA events coordinator, is also working on plans for the UFO Days schedule in 2023. Pending confirmation from the Town Hall, these activities will take place 3/30/2023, 6/29/2023, 8/31/2023, and 11/30/2023. The official Unfinished Objects Days schedule will be posted when we have more information.

BOFA members are also collaborating with the Belfast Historical Society planning committee to include local art and creators in the 2024 Bicentennial Celebrations.

I've been working on ornaments for BOFA. On Day 10, I also met with Arts Service Initiative of Western, NY as we work to bring the Arts Access Pass Program to Allegany County. This easy program provides local residents receiving income-based state assistance with free admission and transportation to arts activities. Eligibility and registration information can be found here.

2022 ORNAMENTAL COLORING PAGES ~ “Angels Among Us”

(Shown above) Donated to the Belfast, NY Community

by the Belfast Organization for Artists (BOFA).

BOFA members will be coloring some of these ornaments

to hang on their annual tree in the Belfast Park Circle.

Tree lighting is December 4, 2022.

An easy to print pdf of all twelve ornaments is attached on Patreon here for your personal use.

For best results, use colored pencil for these pages.

Enjoy!

Local patrons may also obtain prints of any of these twelve ornaments to color for themselves or friends and family at the Belfast Public Library during regular library hours.

It's been a very busy week full of creative Things!

Patrons make it possible for me to create and share Little Things like this.

Thanks so much for holding this space!

Amanda Nicole Curcio Memorial Scholarship Update 2022

Senior Photo of Amanda
Oct. 17, 1989 - May 19, 2007
The Amanda Nicole Curcio Scholarship has moved to the Allegany County Area Foundation
"This was the first step in transitioning the Amanda scholarship fund from an annual fund to a "Perpetual Scholarship" which guarantees that a contribution will live on in perpetuity. One of the last things Amanda wrote was that she did not want to be forgotten, this will help to ensure Amanda's last wish is fulfilled." ~ Joe Curcio

This scholarships still "benefits Belfast Central School students who reflect Amanda’s care and concern for others and display a solid academic record, with special consideration given to applicants showing an interest in creative writing and/or intent to pursue this at the college level.

BCS seniors and graduates may apply for the scholarship through ACAF’s regular online application, which will open on November 1.
This scholarship was originally created in 2007 and school-based before being moved to ACAF this summer."

Questions about the scholarship may be directed to Bruce Campbell at ACAF at director@acafny.org or 585-296-5616.

"Though Amanda lived in several places throughout the state of New York, she loved Belfast and considered it home. She liked the outdoors, music, playing sports, and treasured time with her family and friends. Creative, sensitive, and artistic, Amanda played the guitar and was especially interested in creative writing, drawing, art, and poetry.
She contributed greatly to the Belfast Central School through her kind, caring, and positive nature. Amanda enjoyed making people laugh, smile and appreciate time spent together. She helped others to find their community of friends within BCS and to thrive there. Always very mindful of others, looking out for their well-being and happiness."

Featured Artist Series ~ August 19, 2022

Today we are featuring Patricia Hodgkins, a photographer, ceramic artist, and poet from Wellsville, NY.

Crab Alfredo

It's the way I remember you in my bowl of crab alfredo

And sometimes even in my big toe

The way you remembered your mother in yours

Which is funny because we aren't even related

And I can picture us sitting there on a bench in the mall

Eating Auntie Anne's pretzel sticks with mustard and cheese

I can picture the look you would have on your face when I told you "sometimes my big toe reminds me of you"

I can picture us laughing about it almost to the point of tears

Making a fool of ourselves without a care in the world

But what I can't remember is the sound of your laugh

Because it's been so long since I've heard it

I used to see you still, driving around town, or walking in Giant, but not anymore

And I can't decide how to feel about that.

Part of me misses thinking, even for just a split second, that things are the way they should be

I get so angry at the fact that you were taken away from us

And I can't find a rhyme or a reason as to why you were

And that's because there isn't one

I think that's what makes the anger so hard to let go of

And, so, anger and sadness take turns wreaking havoc inside of me

I don't know how to not be angry at the world for you being gone

And I will never stop being sad about it

But I see you there between the flakes of imitation crab and the alfredo sauce

And for those 10 minutes, it's almost like you're here again.

A NEW THING
ARTS ACCESS IN ALLEGANY COUNTY, NY
Belfast Organization for Artists and SheilaLynnK Art Studio activities are Arts Access pass eligible events.
My Patrons have made it possible for me to have the time to bring this program to the Allegany Arts Association to expand local access to the arts for the wellness of our community.
We are proud to partner with Arts Services Inc. - ASI because:
"Harnessing the power of our network and resources, ASI has been connecting Western New Yorkers to a wide array of arts and cultural programs and events through the Arts Access program since 2013. We believe that art is not a luxury but a necessity. The Arts Access program was created to remove the barriers that prohibit many Western New Yorkers from experiencing the arts, including cost, transportation, language, and effort. Any individual or family who receives income-based public assistance in WNY is eligible to apply. Arts Access passes can be used at any of our 45 partner locations, all of which believe that the arts belong to everyone. ASI will also provide safe and accessible transportation to and from partner events at the passholder’s request. Arts Access passholders can expect to be welcomed as we all work together to make WNY arts a more inclusive space."
